(trendingpoliticsnews) – House Speaker Kevin McCarthy found himself in a position of damage control after questioning former President Donald Trump’s place as the Republican Party’s leading 2024 candidate. In an attempt to rectify the situation, McCarthy reached out to Trump to apologize, according to a report from CNN’s Lauren Fox.
The call took place after McCarthy’s comments sparked controversy, with the House Speaker implying that Trump may not be the GOP’s top candidate for the 2024 presidential race. According to Fox, McCarthy explained to the former president that he “misspoke” and blamed the misunderstanding on journalists for taking his statements out of context.
However, the call was not the end of McCarthy’s damage control efforts. He further sought to clarify his position in an exclusive interview with Breitbart News. During the interview, he discussed his belief that Trump is indeed the strongest candidate to challenge President Joe Biden in the 2024 election.
McCarthy’s campaign later sent out a fundraising email, asserting that “Donald Trump was stronger than ever.” The email seems to be another attempt by McCarthy to ensure that he maintains his right flank, which is crucial for his continued speakership.
McCarthy has recently come to Trump’s aid for a multitude of issues. Last week the House Speaker expressed support for the proposition to expunge the two impeachments of Trump from the historical record. If the impeachments of Trump were to be expunged, it would mean that the official record would have been amended to make it appear as though those impeachments never occurred.
